Parent Town Hall Meeting December 17, 2013

Parent Town Hall Meeting
December 17, 2013

The purpose of the established Town Hall Meetings is to address issues and get feedback from parents.   We have 2 future Town Hall meetings scheduled:  Wednesday, February 19 and Wednesday, April 16 - both will begin at 5:00 pm unless a time change is announced.

SNOW/PLAN E DAYS
o   We will make every effort to make the decision to call a PLAN E day by 6:00 am.
o   Notice of a PLAN E day will be posted on our web site, Facebook, WDTN (Channel 2), and a Constant Contact email will be sent to parents.
o   WDTN offers "text alerts" and parents can subscribe to DRSS to receive notification by text.
o   DRSS is currently researching and investigating the costs to purchase the "One Call Now" service. In addition to the Plan E day notification, this service could be used for special events, etc.
o   Parents ultimately have the final say as to whether or not to bring your child to school due to inclement weather. A child will be excused as long as the parent contacts the school with that information.

SECURITY
o  Monday at 11:30, a 6th grader reported to the administration that there was some writing on the bathroom wall, threatening in nature.
o  The Kettering Police were contacted and have been on campus multiple times and will continue to be here this week.
o  The administration spoke to the 6th graders separately - then the 7th and 8th graders.
o  The investigation is continuing and the matter is taken seriously.
o  Teachers have gone through training for evacuations.   The new philosophy is to LEAVE the building when safe  (ALICE PROGRAM)- as quickly as you can.
o  A drill was conducted in November and the students did a great job in evacuating the building.
o  We are not taking this threat, or any future threat lightly.

GREAT THINGS HAPPENING AT DRSS
o   Exhibition Night, Dedication of the new building and Community Partner Awards on November 15.
o   Building was filled with student excitement and pride.

PARTNERSHIPS
o   We are currently talking with Think TV to form a partnership with the school.     More details will follow once the partnership details have been firmed up.
o   Think TV is also working with us on a project with the Newport Aquarium in conjunction with our biology class, art class and our wellness and fitness class.  This is sure to be an exciting project.
o   Air Force Research Lab and WSU are looking to create 2 learning facilities on our campus in space that has yet to be developed. These learning facilities will be a one of a kind model, building on the STEM concept. These opportunities are very exciting to showcase our school.

AFTER SCHOOL CARE:
o   In 2009, the board stated that we would provide supervision for students until 5:00 pm. This after school program has grown, and we currently have 3 hired staff people to supervise this care. We are looking at charging parents a minimal cost for this care beginning in the 2014-2015 school year. The board is considering this recommendation.

HONOR ROLL/PERFECT ATTENDANCE:
o   Honor Roll and Perfect Attendance awards will be given out at the end of the first semester and at the end of the school year.

GRADUATION:
o   June 7, 2014 Ceremony at Kettering Fairmont Auditorium

MUSIC PROGRAM:
o   Two former music teachers have approached us with a proposal to offer an after school music program at a minimal cost to parents.   We will be doing a survey of the students in January to            gauge their interests and make a decision to proceed with this program.
o   We have an Acapella music program that was started by the students this year and we currerntly have about 19 students that are participating in this program.  The students performed at the              Board Meeting last Wednesday evening and will perform for the student body on Friday.

COMMUNICATIONS POSITION:
o   In the process of interviewing 4 candidates for the Communications/Partnerships position that was vacated by Laurie McFarlin.   We should be able to make an offer by the end of the week.

ROBOTICS:
o   One of our First Lego League teams got 3rd place in a recent competition.

CYBERPATRIOTS:
o   Our CyberPatriots teams continue to do well.  One of our teams placed 10th out of 600 teams Nationally. 2 other DRSS teams placed in the top 200.

EXTRA $$$:
o   We have approximately $120,000 left over from the Phase I building project that needs to be used on ONLY Phase I.   We are looking at building some walls around a couple of more classrooms and some other improvements to that portion of the facility.

PSAT TEST RESULTS:
o   PSAT test results went home with students last week.
o   Our students did very well. - Ms. Fisher will have a composite of the results soon.  Look for this on our website.
o   We are waiting for the return of the EXPLORE (9th Grade) and PLAN (10th Grade) test results. These will be returned to the students sometime in the new year.

BOARD MEMBERS:
o   A parent asked how board members were selected and if parents have ever been considered for a position.
o   The board is looking at a succession plan for a 2 year or 3 year term.
o   Email Dr. Lewis if you have further questions (jeffrey.lewis@wright.edu)
PARENT GROUP:
o   Parents asked about the formation of a parent group.   As the school has grown, it is good to keep parents informed and involved.
o   A Survey Monkey will be sent out after the first of the year to gage the interest in forming a group.
o   If any one is interested in the start up of such a group, please let Dr. Lewis know.

ORGANIZED SPORTS:
o   A parent asked about future organized sports.
o   There are no plans to have athletics at DRSS.
o   Students are allowed to participate in sports at their resident district
o   We are part of the NCAA Clearinghouse if a student is interested in pursuing athletics in a Division I college.

Enhancing Costa Rican Education Benefit Dinner - January 14th

For STEMersion 2013, a group of DRSS students (Grades 10-12) traveled to Costa Rica for biological research, conservation efforts and service. During the trip, we visited an elementary school where we met children from kindergarten to sixth grade, all of whom were sorely lacking in regular school supplies such as books, backpacks, pencils, etc. This experience has had a lasting impact on us, inspiring the Costa Rica group and Key Club to host a banquet in hopes to raise money and collect school supplies to send these Costa Rican children the tools they need to succeed academically.

Details:

What: A Costa Rican style meal will be served, courtesy of Christopher's Catering at the banquet

Cost: $8 per person or $35 for a family of 6 (must be immediate family members)

When: Tuesday, January 14th, 2014 from 6-7:30pm

Where: Cafeteria at The Dayton Regional STEM School

Tickets will be sold during lunch and at the school store. Please pre-purchase tickets.

If you have any questions, please contact Faith Ezell at ezell.3@wright.edu or Kate (Cook) Whitt at Kate.Cook@wright.edu

This event is sponsored by the DRSS Key Club, with many thanks to Christopher's!

If you are going, please let others know by signing up for the event on our Facebook page (optional).

A Note from Dr. Lewis on Plan E & Town Hall Update

Dear DRSS Parents,

We have said our school is a work in progress since its inception, just 5 years ago. We continue to examine and learn about ourselves and to make adjustments as needed. Regarding Tuesday's Plan E day/cancellation, I offer this explanation and a future change in DRSS's process.

Unlike most school districts, our boundary encompasses many Ohio counties (7). In addition, we have a large number of students brought to and taken from school by parents. As a result, delays have never been in our plan. We make decisions based upon what most of the area districts decide. Tuesday was a conundrum, as the forecast was inaccurate, and measurable snowfall greeted us at morning planning and rush hour. When several larger districts decided to cancel and the roads were worsening at 6:15 am, we made the determination to use have the students attend via the internet, "PLan E".   Upon reflection, we really will not have a robust educational day with numerous districts on 2 hour delays and with the chance of "late cancellations".

Therefore, we have decided to call "Plan E Day" anytime a significant number of districts are on delay. I have always tried to make the call as early as possible and pledge, unless really untimely nasty weather arrives, to make cancellation calls by 6:00 a.m.

In addition, be aware that all Dayton media, except Channel 7  (WHIO), will show our announcement.  You can sign up to have text alerts from WDTN - and the notification will come directly to your phone.  Notice of a PLAN E day will also be posted on our school's Web Page, Facebook Page and a constant contact email will be sent to parents.  Finally, we are exploring the cost and benefit of a "One Call Now" system to enhance our effort.

Our next Town Hall meeting is set for Tuesday, December 17 at 5:30 pm. Feel free to join us.

Crayons to Classrooms Competition

Picture by Kurt Baty (Own work) [CC-BY-SA-3.0] via Wikimedia Commons
Students from Mr. Anticoli’s and Mr. Lydy/Adkison’s advisories have been planning a collection of school supplies to help the local charity “Crayons to Classrooms.”

Crayons to Classrooms allow for local teachers of students-in-need to “shop” for school supplies they cannot otherwise afford.

While you are shopping over the next two weeks, please consider picking up any standard school supplies, such as pens, pencils, markers, 24 ct. crayons, filler paper, construction paper, folders, notebooks, scissors, or glue sticks, and bringing/sending them into school with your son or daughter.

For students, the collection area is outside of Ms. Shores’ room and boxes will be separated by grade level to facilitate a friendly competition between grades. The collection will start Monday and go through the school day on December 20th 2013.

Please see the attached link to find out more information about Crayons to Classrooms.

Thanks so much for your generosity!

Special announcements from Dr Lewis

Dear Parents,
We can't believe that the first quarter is behind us and the Holidays coming quickly. There is a lot to celebrate at DRSS; our students are fantastic. We encourage you to share special achievements, success stories and awards relative to your students with us. Our Facebook page and website are created to be informative and highlight the work and effort of students, staff members, teams and organizations throughout the year. There are a few parents who have requested, in writing, that their students should not be seen in school pictures (i.e. Facebook). We encourage those students to bow out of picture opportunities. Also, we will try to monitor, but if a picture is displayed, when parent has indicated disapproval, please notify me ASAP.
We remind you that this a school that focuses on performance and presentations. In many cases, students are paired or participating in groups. The bottom line is that a student's absence will affect the quality of group work, as others are counting on all members to be in attendance and contribute. Parents, please be mindful of this DRSS goal and the need for students to maintain good to great attendance. If vacations can be scheduled during school breaks, that would be appreciated.
                                                                                      Sincerely,

9th Grade Job Shadowing October 24th

This is a reminder that 9th Grade Students will be doing their first Job Shadowing on Thursday, October 24, 2013. Instead of coming to school on that day, all 9th grade students will be going to a Job Shadowing site and will have an associated assignment to complete.

While the Dayton Regional STEM School works with our partners to arrange some Job Shadowing options for students, you are absolutely allowed - and encouraged - to arrange a Job Shadowing opportunity for your student on your own. This can be with your own place of employment, or that of family, friends or neighbors. If you are making your own Job Shadowing arrangement, we need you to complete and return the attached form so that we will know where your student is going on October 24th.

We will also have a unique opportunity this year for our 9th grade students to complete their Job Shadow at Kindred Hospital's first health care career fair on Wednesday, October 23 from 8:30-11:30am at Kindred Hospital. Students choosing this option will need to be dropped at Kindred by parents in the morning - a bus will transport students back to the Dayton Regional STEM School once the fair is over for lunch and regular afternoon classes - students will NOT have an additional job shadow on October 24, but will use their Kindred visit to complete the Job Shadowing assignment. More information to come on this option.

Sign-ups for Job Shadowing will be taking place the week of October 14th - watch for more details to come. In the meantime, please return your self selection form ASAP once you have something planned for your student. Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for your participation in this important aspect of our students' career exploration activities.

PLAN E on Monday and Other Important News

Dear Parents,

Thanks to all of you for helping smooth out the kinks in our morning drop off and afternoon pickup process.  Due to your patience and cooperation, traffic is flowing well and the students are being safely transported to and from school each day.  The 3:15-3:30 time period continues to be the most congested of the day, so we ask that you assist in alleviating the problem by exiting the school at the north end of the parking lot.  Vehicles who travel back to the south exit, against the flow of traffic, after student pickup are creating a safety issue as well as slowing down the process.

The after school supervision program has become much more effective as well.  Students who remain after school have the opportunity to attend study tables on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.  They also are able to attend a study hall each day, or have the option of participating in physical activities and games.  All students are being supervised until 5:00 pm.  In order to create a safe environment where all students are supervised until they are picked up, we ask that you coordinate a specific pick up time with your child each day.   If you have any questions about after school clubs and activities, please contact the faculty advisor for that club or activity.

On Monday, September 16 we will hold our first Plan E day at DRSS.   This day is considered to be a regular school day in that students will be expected to study and complete class assignments by a certain date and time.  In the future, high school students will attend virtual classes with their teachers through the Elluminate program (thus the E in Plan E day), but for this first Plan E day, high school students can find their assignments (and deadlines) on Pilot.  Middle school students will be assigned work on Friday that will be due the following Tuesday.

Thank you for a very successful start to the school year!

News about PSAT testing from Ms. Fisher

Dear Parents of students in grades 8-11,

I am writing to alert you to some upcoming PSAT testing opportunities that will be available at the Dayton Regional STEM School.

The following statement describes what the PSAT assessment measures:

The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). It's a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT®. It also gives you (Juniors only) a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools.

The PSAT/NMSQT measures:

Critical reading skills
Math problem-solving skills
Writing skills

So, here are the options:

FREE PRACTICE TEST

On Saturday, September 21, the Princeton Review will be offering a "FREE" practice PSAT at the Dayton Regional STEM School. The free practice test on September 21will allow current juniors the chance to experience the testing format of the PSAT before they take the actual assessment in October.  The practice PSAT may also be useful to underclassmen who want additional opportunities to practice college admission type assessments for no charge. The test will begin at 9am and should end around 11:30am. Please have your student arrive by 8:45 that day to allow time for registration and announcements. Please click on the following link to register for this testing date:

PSAT Practice Test

REAL PSAT - OFFERED THROUGH COLLEGE BOARD

The REAL PSAT will be given on October 16 at DRSS. Each year, the school gives the College Board PSAT to all Juniors free of charge. At that time, students in grades 8-10 may also choose to take the assessment as long as they pay a testing fee of $20. If you have a student in grade 8th, 9th or 10th that will be taking the real PSAT on October 16, please email me at robin.fisher@wright.edu. You simply need to supply the students name and grade level. Return payment of $20 in the form of check (made out to Dayton Regional STEM School) or cash to the front office by Friday, October 4.

Please remember that NMSC scholarship opportunities are only available to juniors who test on the October 16 testing date.

Please contact me if you have any questions at robin.fisher@wright.edu.

New System for ProgressBook

Parents, ProgressBook is now up and running. ProgressBook has recently undergone a major transition to their website, but you can now find a link on the DRSS homepage along the left-hand column or on the Parent Page on the website. You can also bookmark the new ProgressBook login URL: https://gb.mdeca.org/parentaccess/

The Parent Registration Key, which you will need in order to log in to ProgressBook, is in the mail and should be arriving in the next couple of days. Once you have your personal registration key, you will be able to log in.

Also for those of you who are new to ProgressBook, there are directions on the Parent Page (http://www.daytonstemschool.org/#!parents-students/c1aoj) for how to set up alerts to go directly to your personal email or cell phone letting you know if you students have missed assignments or if they are falling behind in their classwork. Please follow the instructions for setting this up, as this can be a valuable tool for making sure your son or daughter does not fall behind in his or her classes.

New State Report Card is Out

Hello DRSS parents:

You may have seen in recent news reports that the Ohio Department of Education on Wednesday released the new School Report Cards issuing A-F letter grades in up to nine performance areas. Previously, school Report Cards assessed schools and districts mostly on achievement test results and rated them using descriptors such as "Excellent" or "Academic Watch."

Here is a link to our Dayton Regional STEM School Report Card: http://media.wix.com/ugd/d3564a_500c438bcf44758b7a399d8c2d10bda4.pdf

As you will see, the format is different from previous years and reflects some gaps since we do not yet have the data or because our number of students is too small. A strength that is evident in the report is that we met 100% of the State Indicators. These indicators measure how many students have passed the state standardized tests (OGTs and OAAs). Test results are reported for each student in a grade and subject. At least 75 percent of students must pass to get credit for the indicator. The report also shows areas marked for improvement, particularly Progress, or Value Added, where a grade of F was reported. At this point we are unclear as to the calculation method to assess this grade. We are currently looking into the data utilized, the sample size and the calculation method to gauge our response.

Please know that we remain committed to providing your children - our students - with a rigorous, relevant and meaningful STEM-focused education; and are dedicated to the mission to ensure that they will be well prepared for their pursuits once they graduate from the Dayton Regional STEM School. While report cards, based mainly on state mandated testing, provide one method of evaluating effectiveness, we believe that there are other measures that may more accurately predict the future success of our students.

We will report back to all of our stakeholders once we have a better understanding of the new format of the 2012-2013 School Report Card. In the meantime, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

First Week of School Letter from Dr. Lewis

Dear DRSS Parents,

With all of the additions and upgrades to our physical building and with major changes to our administrative staff, we have adapted. It has been an excellent beginning to the 2013-14 school year. Our students are sensational!! Our intent is to continually improve our website and methods of promoting  students, groups and school with the media while keeping parents informed, as well. Please note there is an Open House from 5:00-7:00 on August 29 and the first Town Hall meeting is slated for 5:00 p.m. on September 19.
I would like to share some thoughts and suggestions regarding student drop-off and pick-up and after school supervision:
     *  morning drop-off - before 7:50, parents will only be able to drop students at the designated driveway situated just south of the main entrance. Buses will have total access to the driveway in front of the main entrance. During that time, cars entering from the south will be stopped at the stop sign; cars at the central entrance will have priority and will be directed to the drop-off area. Cars may leave from the south or north exits at that time. After 7:50, cars from the south will be using the drop-off area directly in front of the main entrance and will also exit at the south cut to Woodman. Those entering at the middle entrance will drop off students at the designated car location and exit from the north cut to Woodman.
     * afternoon pick-up - school dismisses at 3:15. My suggestion is that when parents can wait until 3:30-3:40, the lot will be less congested, and the flow in and out of the lot should be much smoother. After the buses have left (at about 3:25) both lanes can be used for pick up.
For both morning and afternoon, we will paint crossing areas (in front of the high school entrance) and on the curve for car drop-off/pick-up. It is essential that students coming into school in the morning or locating a car in the afternoon use those marked walks. Parents are thanked for adapting to this new system. It has flowed more smoothly throughout the week, even with the Woodman construction.
      * after-school - we will have supervision until 5 p.m. It is important that students are picked up by 5.
      * Currently, we are short-handed in terms of supervision. That will change. We remind parents that once students have left the premises, they will not be allowed back into the school. When the weather is good, we will have groups in the area south of the school and in the cafeteria. We ask parents to contact students via cellphones when they are arriving. Otherwise, there are countless P.A. notices indicating parents have arrived.
2013-14 has the marking for a banner year; we look forward to sharing the accomplishments and direction of DRSS with you while growing through your thoughts, as well.

Dr. Jeff Lewis, Chief Academic Officer/Principal

Summer Hours and Parking

Hello Dayton Regional STEM School parents.

Just want you to be aware that we are operating on reduced, summer
hours here at the School: Monday through Friday from 9:00-11:30am and
then from 12:30-2:00pm. During those times, the front doors to the
School will be open. The BEST thing to do is call ahead to make sure
someone will be here at the School to save yourself a trip.

Additionally, the front parking area of the School will be undergoing
some changes over the summer. Please be aware that access into the
parking lot and front door may be a bit more challenging – several of
the entrance drives may be closed off and you will need to enter
closer to Frickers. Be on the lookout for cones and cordoned-off
areas- you may have to park towards Dollar General and walk a bit to
get into the front door. This summer inconvenience will result in a
safer front parking lot for next fall.

Thanks for your patience and understanding!

Year In Review 2012-2013

As the year draws to a close, it’s nice to look back and recap many of the things that our students and teachers have accomplished. Below is a list of many of the things that have happened over the course of the 2012-2013 school year that we wanted to highlight. We may have missed some, but there are so many amazing things going on that it’s hard to keep track of it all! Be sure to come and see what your students have done at the Exhibition Night this Friday, June 7th, from 4-7, with the play at 4:30!

-Our 10th graders did an amazing job on their OGTs this year, with the following passing rates:
  • Reading- 100%
  • Math- 95%
  • Writing 100%
  • Science- 98 %
  • Social Studies 97%
- Our very first LEGO League teams took part in a competition at Central State University. The STEMChix received a local award from Central State that was $75 Dollars to pay for next years State Registration Fees. The Brickheads won the 2nd Place Champions award. The STEMBotics won the District Ambassador Award and the 1st Place Champions Award.

- Tess, Leif, David, and Tyler placed 3rd overall at this year’s Junior Council on World Affairs Quiz Bowl. They finished 3rd out of 55 teams total from schools all around the Dayton area.

- Kennan French, one of our 11th grade students, was awarded the 2nd place prize for his essay submission to a McGraw-Hill essay contest during Mrs. Durkee’s US Government course.

-The CyberPatriots team in the first year saw both teams finish in the first quartile nationally.

-On March 16th, the following Science Olympians received medals at the Piqua Regional:
Division C (High School)
  • 4th Place Chemistry Lab (Josh & Cheikh)
  • 5th Place Fermi Questions (Josh & Cheikh)
  • 6th Place Materials Science (Anne & Matt)
Division B (Middle School)
  • 6th Place Shock Value (Orlando & Ryan)
- The District Science Fair occurred in March. Our students participated and presented their research (13 projects in total), and the results were amazing. 10 projects of the 13 advanced to the state level, and the students won a total of 6 special awards as well, listed below:
  • Eric Towe and Omena Mushale – Air force Award
  • Ean Milligan – APA award and certificate
  • Jacob Penick
  • Vidur Prasad – Society of American Engineers award for best engineering project; Plaque and $150 and invite to Banquet; Levin Porter Architects award for innovative use of materials in traditional and non-traditional applications; $50 and front row baseball tickets; McAulay-Brown award for best engineering project; $100 Army Certificate
-10th grader Noah Dversdall placed third in Division II of the Max May Memorial Art contest for his linoleum block print about the Bosnian Genocide. Noah was presented with an award on Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah) at the Temple Beth Or Synagogue. All student posters were displayed at the Dayton Peace Museum, and many will be on display next fall at the Dayton Art Institute.

- Students Josh Jordan (12th Grade) and Kennan French (11th Grade) competed in the Kettering Rotary Club’s “4 Way Test” Speech Contest. Josh Jordan earned 1st place in the competition.
- The following students placed in the Ohio Mathematics League Algebra I contest:
  • First place- Nathan Keefer (score 18)
  • Second place (tie)- Vidur Prasad and Evan Bailey (score 17)
  • Third place (tie)- Brianna Hayslett and Anders Sondergaard (score 16)
- The Economics students in Team DRSS-4 won second place in the high school division of the Ohio Stock Market Challenge for Spring 2013, out of 145 teams of students around the Dayton area. The students recognized were Ryan Truesdell, Sharde Scott-Manning, Killian Macnish, and Tim Brown. They increased the value of their portfolios by 14.21% in just 10 weeks, with the winning team increasing the value of its portfolio by 14.33%, so they were a very close second.

- For the past two years 12-year old scientists Josie Baudendistel has been studying forensic scavenging patterns for her science fair projects in conjunction with Dr. Eric Benbow, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Dayton. She has successfully funded her project through crowdfunding and will be able to conduct her research.

-Our science fair students performed admirably this past year at the State Science Fair as ‘State Science Fair Scholars’. The following students were recognized:
