Volunteer Profile at DRSS - Emilly Collins

Emilly Collins is a junior at Wright State University who is studying Middle Childhood Education, and she's become a familiar face around the Dayton Regional STEM School's Middle School. After reaching out over the summer to inquire about volunteering at the school, Emilly found a home in Pat Murakami's STEM Foundations class on Thursdays and in Nichole Miller's room on Tuesdays, where she helps tutor students for study tables.

Originally from London, Ohio, Emilly is a Junior at WSU this year.

Emilly initially reached out to Superintendent Fisher over the summer during an Open House event at AFRL's Gaming Research Integration for Learning Laboratory (the GRILL), where she completed an internship working on Project-Based Learning curriculum development. Initially, she hoped to volunteer because she plans on staying in the Dayton area and was interested in "getting to know the local schools." When she has her own class, she hopes to have a student-centered classroom where students "inquire and discover the content," and she recognized DRSS as a school that exemplifies this unique PBL approach.

When recounting what she's learned so far from volunteering in STEM Foundations, she explains that "the class is awesome because it prepares students to be successful not only in the rest of their classes, but also in the real world. This class has showed me how important consistency is throughout the school."

What excites her the most about volunteering, Emilly says, is "watching the students find their passion and realizing how school can help them pursue their dreams. The best part about volunteering is getting to know a diverse and unique group of students." We truly appreciate Emilly's help and dedication of her time and talents!
